How to actually install these in your day

A list of 21 happy thoughts is useful only if you reach for them when you need them. Here’s what I do, in order of effort.

  1. The morning minute. Right after I get up, before I touch my phone, I pick one of the thoughts above that fits whatever I’m bracing for that day. If I have a hard conversation coming, it’s usually #4 (you’re trying your best) or #11 (you can still be the hero). I say it out loud, once. That’s it.
  2. The 3-good-things check-in. Before bed, write down three specific things that went well that day. Not abstractions. “My coffee was hot.” “My friend texted me first.” “The walk home was quieter than usual.” This is the closest practical version of the gratitude protocol Emmons and McCullough ran in their RCT.
  3. The interrupt. When I catch myself looping on a bad thought for the third time, I name it (“I’m doing the looping thing again”) and pick one of the 21 above as the replacement. The naming matters. Without it, the swap doesn’t stick.

Life is already unfortunate enough; negative thoughts on top of that aren’t going to make any of it better.
